Fleet
Van Interim Policy
UW System Administration, in response to advice from the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has developed the following
interim policy and ordered that campuses implement it effective
July 1:
- Students may not drive 15-passenger vans unless the student
is older than 25, meets System driving requirements and completes
required training for operating passenger vans.
- Towing with 15-passenger vans is banned.
- Car top carriers with 15-passenger vans are banned.
- There is a block on leasing 15-passenger vans through state
and university contracts unless approved by the risk management
office.
- Cargo my be transported in 15-passenger vans if cargo and
passengers are restricted in size, weight and number to the
manufacturer's suggested capacity.
- Faculty and staff may drive 15-passenger vans if they meet
System driving requirements, complete required training and
are at least 25 years old.
These restrictions likely will be extended
to 12-passenger vans. An update will be issued if System Administration
takes this step. In rare instances, exceptions to the policy may
be allowed. Exceptions must be approved in writing by the chancellor,
with the concurrence of the System Risk Office. Requests for exceptions
at UW-Eau Claire should be submitted to Andrew Soll, Vice Chancellor
for Business and Student Services.
