Communication and Journalism
David Gordon (emeritus) coordinated and participated in a panel discussion at the state Associated Press editors meeting in May in Wausau. The topic was "Online Ethics: What are the Boundaries?" and dealt with the ethical dimensions of such issues as the temptation to break a story without checking or copy editing it thoroughly, streaming video on newspaper Web sites (including the role that background music can play), and using online photo galleries as a vehicle to sell copies to the public. The panel and audience also discussed ethics concerns in relation to blogs (by "citizen journalists" and newspaper staffers) on newspaper Web sites.
