Partnership with Nicolet College to benefit social work students
The road to a degree in social work will be smoother for students in northern Wisconsin, thanks to an educational partnership between UW-Eau Claire and Nicolet College, a public community college serving that area. The partnership makes it possible for Nicolet students interested in a social work degree to take introductory social work courses from UW-Eau Claire via distance education at the same time they are working on a two-year associate degree through Nicolet. After transferring to UW-Eau Claire, they can complete a bachelor’s degree in social work in two years. The program is an example of the cooperation sought by educators and legislators to make good use of the state’s resources, said Steven Tallant, interim provost at UW-Eau Claire. “Bottom line, this agreement is about students,” Tallant said. “It makes it possible for them to earn a degree in social work in a more timely and efficient manner.” Full story. Rita Webb to discuss peacekeepers in Sri Lanka July 26 Webb has been a participant in an international civilian peacekeeping pilot project in Sri Lanka since September 2003 through the Nonviolent Peaceforce, an organization headquartered in St. Paul, Minn. During her presentation, Webb will describe the project and share reflections on the role of international citizens in helping protect noncombatants and build cultures of peace in conflict areas of the world. A groundbreaking ceremony for the Carson Park artificial turf project was held July 22 at the football field in Carson Park. Several longtime partners of UW-Eau Claire made gifts through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation to help pay for the installation of artificial turf and a new scoreboard at Carson Park. The UW-Eau Claire Student Senate has pledged $300,000 toward the project. Other contributions to the project were made directly to the Carson Park Turf Committee through the Eau Claire Parks and Recreation office. The effort to replace the Carson Park football field’s natural grass with artificial turf began in fall 2003 as a result of concerns about the condition and safety of the playing surface, which becomes muddy due to heavy use. Completion of the $800,000 Carson Park artificial turf project is expected in time for the fall 2004 football season. Five UW-Eau Claire students contribute research to state effort to advance women
Research conducted by five students from UW-Eau Claire was so well received at a recent Wisconsin Women Equals Prosperity Symposium in Madison that the research team has been asked to continue providing data for those involved in an ongoing effort to liberate the "prosperity potential" of women in Wisconsin. Seniors Barbara Featherly, Tracey Gilbert, Michele Shaw, Jennifer Immich and junior Sarah Johnston provided spatial analyses in the form of maps and graphs to help identify differences between rural and urban women and Northern and Southern Wisconsin women and the economic challenges they face. All five students have either majors or minors in geography or anthropology. Lisa Theo, geography and anthropology, recruited the student researchers after she attended the initial organizing effort for WW=P in June 2003 and noticed that geographical differences were not being considered. Theo thought that those differences would be important to the four task forces that were created to address the health, safety and well-being; educational advancement and achievement; economic sufficiency; and leadership and political participation of women in Wisconsin. Second phase of Davies Center office and service relocations completed Effective Aug. 1, services offered by the Service Center, Blugold Card Office and Campus Information Services will be centralized at the Service Center in the east lobby of Davies Center. The Service Center will be open whenever Davies Center is open, greatly expanding its service hours. University Centers and Programs is a Student Services unit of UW-Eau Claire. Full story. Billy Krause Trio to perform on campus July 26 The three-man acoustic group performs both familiar and obscure, but always enjoyable, non-mainstream music. Billy Krause, Chuck Roll and Mike Quick are veteran musicians who have worked for more than 30 years in many formats — as solo artists, in small ensembles, and in table-thumping electric roadhouse bands. Full story. On Tuesday and Thursday, July 20 and 22, “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” (2000) will screen at noon and 7 p.m. in Davies Theatre.
