Summer Fitness Classes. The following free fitness classes will be offered during Summer Session. Hydrorobics: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 6:15 to 7:15 a.m., McPhee Pool; Cardio/Strength: Mondays, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Higherground; Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:15 to 7 a.m., McPhee Dance Studio; and Wednesdays, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Higherground; Step: Tuesdays, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., McPhee 127; Spinning: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., McPhee 127; and Mondays and Wednesdays, 4 to 5 p.m., McPhee 127 (June 14-July 16). Massage Therapy is available Monday through Friday. Call 836-3377 for appointments.
Ron Kind visit to NYSP. U.S. Rep. Ron Kind will visit with area youngsters participating in the National Youth Sports Program at UW-Eau Claire. Kind will begin his visit in Room 105 of Hilltop Center. He will then go to Simpson Field, where he will throw passes to NYSP campers. 9 to 11 a.m.
Jazz at Noon. Featuring UW-Eau Claire and area jazz musicians. A variety of grilled lunch items will be sold. Central Campus Mall (rain site: The Cabin, Davies Center), noon to 1 p.m. Weekdays through July 2; and July 7 and 8.
Music on the Mall. Featuring Dennis Warner performing acoustic folk-country music. He presents upbeat, up-tempo family concerts in more than 100 cities each year — from small village gatherings in Alaska to huge auditoriums in Florida. Audience members are invited to bring blankets or folding chairs for lawn seating. Central Campus Mall (rain site: Schofield Auditorium or The Cabin, Davies Center), 7 p.m.

Summer Cinema. "Miller's Crossing." (U.S. 1990, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, 115 min., rated R.) An Irish gangster (Albert Finney) and his trusted lieutenant (Gabriel Byrne) and counselor find their domination of the town threatened by an ambitious Italian underboss (Jon Polito). Just as this threat erupts, the two sever their friendship when they realize that they love the same woman (Marcia Gay Harden). When one joins ranks with the enemy, a bloody gang war erupts. Davies Theatre, noon and 7 p.m. Also July 1.

Concerts in the Park. UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education and the Indianhead Arts & Education Center will sponsor a series of summer concerts at the Shell Lake Pavilion in Shell Lake. Tonight's concert, performed by the Jazz Faculty begins at 6:30 p.m. More information is available online.

Tribute to the Big Bands Concert. UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education and the Indianhead Arts & Education Center will host its annual Tribute to the Big Bands at 7 p.m. tonight in the IAEC auditorium, 802 1st Street, Shell Lake. The concert is an annual benefit for the IAEC Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance for students to attend IAEC summer camps. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 for the public or $5 for students. Full story.

Indianhead Arts & Education Center Concerts. Saturday, July 3
Memorial Celebration.
A memorial celebration for Signe Midelfart Ortiz, associate professor emerita of art, will be held today from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Ecumenical Religious Center at UW-Eau Claire. Ortiz, who taught in the UW-Eau Claire art department from 1959-79, died March 19, 2004, in Walnut Creek, Calif.

University Closed. UW-Eau Claire will be closed today in observance of the Fourth of July holiday. State guidelines specify that when an official holiday occurs on Sunday, the holiday will be observed the following Monday.
