UW-Eau Claire launches redesigned Web site
Redesigned upper level pages of the UW-Eau Claire Web site are now live at www.uwec.edu. The group chartered to redesign the Web site has been working for more than a year to evaluate the previous site and create a redesigned site that meets the following criteria:

• Establishes a clear image identity.
• Provides easy navigation.
• Provides understandable terminology.
• Provides consistency across sites.
• Improves customer service.

Learn more, provide feedback — To learn about features of the redesigned pages, click on "Using this Site" at the lower left of the home page. Please report broken links or other problems with upper level pages to Lillian Hillis at hillislf@uwec.edu. Your continued feedback also is welcome. Click here to submit comments via the Web.

Templates — Templates are being developed for Web publishers across campus who wish to have their sites reflect the navigation and design of the new upper level pages. Watch for the fall workshop flyer for information on template training opportunities. If you are interested in using templates before fall, contact Lillian Hillis at hillislf@uwec.edu. Support, training and documentation will be provided by Computing and Networking Services.

Printing — When printing, the redesigned pages may not print exactly as they appear on the Web. Work continues to fine-tune printing parameters so printed pages will more closely reflect the Web Format.

Redesign process —The Web work group conducted user surveys and focus groups and consulted with a variety of constituencies across campus including the Electronic Communications and Publications Committee, Student Development and Diversity, Academic Affairs Leadership Council, Executive Staff, students and others to identify needs and priorities. In addition, the work group reviewed hundreds of higher education Web sites and engaged a Web development consulting firm to identify and implement current best practices.

During development the redesign was presented to a number of groups on campus that represent faculty, staff, students and administration. Suggestions were considered and implemented as the redesign progressed. Prior to launch, the redesign prototype site was made available for review and feedback.

New College of Arts and Sciences dean to begin at UW-Eau Claire Aug. 1
Donald P. Christian will assume the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences responsibilities Aug. 1, replacing interim dean Bernard Duyfhuizen, Chancellor Donald Mash announced May 25. Duyfhuizen will return to his position as associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

"I'm enthusiastic about the leadership Dr. Christian will bring to the College of Arts and Sciences," Mash said. "He has dedicated his career to higher education, and has proven in past positions that he is committed to academic excellence, is a strong promoter of the scholarly activities of the faculty, and has exceptional communication skills. His colleagues speak of him in superlatives."

Christian currently serves as the associate dean for the biological sciences and professor of biological sciences at the University of Montana in Missoula. He has been in his current position since 1997. The University of Montana is a "doctoral intensive" university and the flagship liberal arts university in the state. Full story.

UW-Eau Claire's health care administration program is gaining national attention for its success in bringing quality students to the health and aging services administration field, a field that has had difficulty attracting talented young leaders in recent years.

"I believe we're the only program of our kind in the country that's growing," said Jennifer Johs-Artisensi, assistant professor of health care administration. "Our enrollment has doubled in the last four years and is continuing to grow. We are considering capping enrollment at 100 students to maintain the program's quality."

UW-Eau Claire revamped its program to better prepare its graduates to meet the needs of the health care field today, said Doug Olson, assistant professor of health care administration.

"There was a disconnect between how universities prepared students for health care administration careers and with how providers operate," Olson said, noting the program began in 1976. "Private organizations challenged universities to think differently. At UW-Eau Claire, we took that challenge seriously."

The result was the creation of the Center for Health and Aging Services Excellence, which brings health care professionals together with health care administration faculty and students in various ways. Full story.

UW-Eau Claire names Scott Kilgallon director of Intercollegiate Athletics
Scott Kilgallon has been hired as the director of Intercollegiate Athletics at UW-Eau Claire, Interim Provost Steve Tallant announced last Monday.

Kilgallon will assume the director responsibilities July 1, replacing Interim Athletic Director Tim Petermann. Petermann will return to his position as assistant to the athletic director and director of sports information.

For the last seven years, Kilgallon has been the director of athletics at Southern Vermont College, as well as the men's and women's cross country/track coach.

"Mr. Kilgallon has the dynamic leadership skills and the experience necessary to continue moving our athletics program forward," Tallant said. "And most importantly, he shares UW-Eau Claire's strong commitment to the NCAA Division III philosophy emphasizing high-level competition among student-athletes." Full story.

Summer Session programs at UW-Eau Claire kick off with outdoor concert by Howard Luedtke
An outdoor concert by Howard "Guitar" Luedtke and Blue Max will open an eight-week series of free Summer Session Programs at UW-Eau Claire on Monday, June 14. T he Summer Session Programs show will begin at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall.

Led by one of the Midwest's best slide guitar players, Blue Max has opened shows for such big-name blues artists as Long John Baldrey, Lonnie Brooks, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Li'l Ed and the Blues Imperials, Tinsley Ellis, Jeff Healey, Jimmy Johnson, Kenny Neal, A.C. Reed, Eddy Shaw, Herbert Sumlin, Koko Taylor, Joe Louis Walker and Johnny Winter.

Also on campus during the week of June 14 are these free Summer Session Programs:

• A festival of films by the Coen brothers will open with "Blood Simple," screening Tuesday and Thursday at noon and 7 p.m.
• Jazz combos will play during lunch in the open air, from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday through Friday on the Central Campus Mall. A variety of grilled lunch items will be sold.

Summer Session Programs continue through Aug. 5. A complete schedule of events is available online.

Campus closed July 5
UW-Eau Claire will be closed Monday, July 5, in observance of the Fourth of July holiday. State guidelines specify that when an official holiday occurs on Sunday, the holiday will be observed the following Monday. Therefore, Summer Session classes will not be held and offices will be closed Monday, July 5.
