UW-Eau Claire Professor and Writer
To Discuss Literary Journalism at Forum
MAILED: Nov. 21, 2002
EAU CLAIRE — Nonfiction writer John Hildebrand will discuss the field of literary journalism — the fact-finding of journalism mixed with the narrative techniques of literature — at a Forum presentation Thursday, Dec. 5, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
His address, titled “Chasing Stories: A Narrative View of Life,” will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium. The formal presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session and a reception. The program will be signed for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Hildebrand’s writing explores the connections between people and landscape, combining factual reporting with literary techniques to reveal American society. Professor of English at UW-Eau Claire, he has written two books — “Reading the River: A Voyage Down the Yukon” (1988), and “Mapping the Farm: The Chronicle of a Family” (1995) — and his articles and essays have appeared in Harper’s, Audubon, Outside, The Missouri Review and Sports Illustrated.
“Hildebrand has every skill of mind and craft to enfold us in his experience,” wrote The New Yorker magazine.
In 2001 Hildebrand was named the third recipient of the Maxwell Schoenfeld Distinguished Professorship, an award that recognizes a commitment to the university, achievement in scholarship and a commitment to student learning and life.
This program marks the return of the Provost’s Lecture to The Forum.
Admission is $7 for the public, $5 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $3 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students. Tickets are available at the University Service Center in Davies Center and will be sold at the door.
Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.
The Forum is funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and administered by the Activities and Programs office of University Centers and Programs.
