UW-Eau Claire International Film Series
Concludes with 'Irma Vep' May 2-5

MAILED: April 18, 2002

EAU CLAIRE "Irma Vep" (France 1996), a spiky satire of the movie industry, will conclude this year's International Film Series May 2-5 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
In English and in French subtitled in English, the 96-minute comedy will be presented at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.
A director (Jean-Pierre Leaud) whose career is on the skids takes on the assignment of remaking the classic 1915 silent serial "Les Vampires." Believing no French actress can recreate Musidora's performance as Irma Vep (an anagram for vampire), he casts Hong Kong action diva Maggie Cheung (playing herself) as the mysterious cat-burglar protagonist. Unable to speak a word of French, Cheung finds herself in a production beset with problems.
"[Olivier] Assayas wrote the script for 'Irma Vep' in 10 days, shot and edited the film in a matter of weeks, and the result is a film of such spontaneity, freshness and breezy chaos that you feel as if it were assembled from happy accidents and inspired, seat-of-the-pants improvisation," wrote the San Francisco Chronicle. "'Irma Vep' blurs the line between reality and fantasy, toys with notions of identity and offers a playfully jaundiced look at the petty jealousies and acts of sabotage that infect film crews in the heat of production."
Tickets are $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727.
