UW-Eau Claire celebrates commencement May 16

Spring commencement exercises for 1,217 students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will be held May 16 in Zorn Arena. Tickets are required for admission to commencement; however, the ceremonies can be viewed via live Web streaming.

Candidates from the College of Arts and Sciences and candidates for master's degrees will receive degrees during a 9 a.m. ceremony. Candidates from the College of Business, College of Education and Human Sciences, and College of Nursing and Health Sciences will receive degrees during a 2 p.m. ceremony.

JoAnne Brandes, a retired chief administrative officer and attorney at SC Johnson and JohnsonDiversey Inc. and a 1975 UW-Eau Claire journalism and political science graduate, will deliver the "Charge to the Class" during the morning and afternoon ceremonies.

A reception for graduates and guests will follow each ceremony on the Central Campus Mall. If it rains, the reception will move to the Spruce-Tamarack Room of Davies Center. Full story.

• Larry Glenn, senior media specialist emeritus in Learning and Technology Services
• MaryEdna Hagen, university services program associate, College of Education and Human Sciences field experience office
• John Hildebrand, professor emeritus of English
• Marilyn Kanne, outreach program manager emerita in Continuing Education
• Ann Klawiter, university services associate, history
• Larry Lawrence, custodian, Schofield Hall
• Jeffery Odenbreit, electronics/media technician, Housing and Residence Life
• Larry Pittman, groundskeeper, Facilities Planning and Management
• Rick Richmond, administrative program manager emeritus in Learning and Technology Services
• Sandra Schulner, dean's assistant, College of Education and Human Sciences
• Theodore Short, advanced engineering specialist, Facilities Planning and Management
• Dr. Nicholas Smiar, professor emeritus of social work
• Dr. Lois Taft, professor emerita of nursing
• Ione Valk, office associate, University Centers and Programs
• Dr. Karen Welch, assistant professor emerita of English and director of composition
• Janet Wittrock, financial specialist, University Centers and Programs.

Alumni Association honors outstanding students
The UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association honored the following 15 students at an awards luncheon May 6 in Davies Center:

• Russell Raja Dass, an economics and business finance major from Malaysia, Center for International Education Outstanding Student Award
• Lyndsay Nelson, psychology, Multicultural Affairs Office Outstanding Student Award
• Nicole Lillis, communications, Nontraditional Student Services Outstanding Student Award
• Katie Klotz, biochemistry and molecular biology, and Cody Meyers, Latin American studies, College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Student Awards
• Sarah Leuck, accounting, College of Business Outstanding Student Award
• Elizabeth Crammond, social work, and Colleen Toltzman, political science, College of Education and Human Sciences Outstanding Student Awards

Alumni Association to present awards Saturday

Five graduates of UW-Eau Claire will receive awards from the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association May 16 at a luncheon and ceremony in conjunction with spring commencement. JoAnne Brandes will receive the Lifetime Excellence Award, which is presented to UW-Eau Claire alumni who have demonstrated longtime and successful commitment to their careers and communities. Reggie Bicha and Ritter Diaz will receive the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award, which recognizes distinguished service to the community, state or nation that brings credit upon the recipient and the university. Michael Carney will receive the President's Award, which recognizes outstanding professional and personal achievements and service to UW-Eau Claire. Samual Ecoff will receive the Outstanding Recent Alumnus Award, which acknowledges special achievements and great promise of alumni who are within 15 years of their graduation from UW-Eau Claire.
