Michael Wick named FYE director Dr. Michael Wick has been named director of UW-Eau Claire's First-Year Experience program, Dr. Susan Turell, interim associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of undergraduate studies, has announced. Wick, a professor of computer science and chair of the computer science department, will assume the half-time FYE director duties Jan. 1. He will succeed current FYE director Donald Mowry, who will continue in his roles as director of UW-Eau Claire's service-learning program and a professor of social work. All new freshmen at UW-Eau Claire have the opportunity to take an FYE course. FYE classes are small sections of regular courses that are open only to freshmen. Each class has a student mentor and is taught by an experienced faculty member. Prof to discuss Frederick Douglass Myers, who recently published the book "Frederick Douglass: Race and the Rebirth of American Liberalism," will discuss how understanding the writings and life of former slave Douglass can enable one to develop a deeper sense of the context of the issues and events of the 2008 political season. The event, which is free and open to the public, is cosponsored by the Network of Unitarian Universalist Students and the departments of history, political science, English, and philosophy and religious studies.Advocates to speak on violence against women Artists Series presents acclaimed pianist Tharaud
Internationally acclaimed pianist Alexandre Tharaud will present an all-Ravel recital Oct. 23 at UW-Eau Claire. The Artists Series concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of Haas Fine Arts Center. The pianist will be joined by the University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Nobuyoshi Yasuda, for the second half of the program. "The current It boy of young French pianists is Alexandre Tharaud," wrote the Toronto Star. "At times you wonder how human fingers can achieve such delicate playing." Full story.
