UW-Eau Claire drops summer commencement With fewer than half the candidates for graduation participating in the August ceremony, eliminating the ceremony has been discussed for several years, Levin-Stankevich said. Given the fiscal challenges currently facing the university, it made sense to make the change now, he said. UW-Eau Claire was the last campus in the UW System to offer a summer commencement, Levin-Stankevich said, noting that only about 215 students typically graduate in August, significantly fewer students than the number who graduate in December and May. New Web page is budget information source ROTC pilot program comes to UW-Eau Claire For the 2009-10 academic year, ROTC classes will be offered through UW-Eau Claire's Continuing Education program, Wood said. After the pilot phase, if the ROTC program is approved through the university's shared governance system, it will become a series of courses offered through the College of Business, he said. Given the ROTC's focus on leadership development, the program will be aligned with the College of Business' Center for Leadership, said Dr. Robert Sutton, associate dean of the College of Business. Starting in the fall, ROTC office space will be housed in Schneider Hall, he said. Full story.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, trayless days … A Trayless Tuesdays program that started in fall 2008 was such a success that it was expanded to Wednesdays during the spring semester, said Christian Wise, food services director at UW-Eau Claire. Trays will be eliminated completely at the start of the fall 2009 semester, he said, noting that a few trays will remain for students for whom it would be physically difficult to go without trays, such as students who use wheelchairs or crutches. "Trays account for a significant portion of our dishwashing — more than 6,000 are cleaned each day on campus, resulting in more than 396,000 gallons of water being used for this one purpose only," Wise said. "Going trayless lessens the environmental impact we generate here on campus. A significant amount of water and electricity is saved, food waste is diverted from landfills and, above all, we make a small dent in reducing carbon emissions." Full story. Blugold Family Weekend set for April 24-26 "The weekend will give our students' loved ones a chance to get a taste of life at UW-Eau Claire," said Jennifer Lee, director of the Blugold Family Connection. "We'll offer more than 30 events and programs during the weekend. Activities will range from classroom discussions with faculty, to entertainment showcasing talented students, to demonstrations of cutting edge technology, to recreation activities." An Eau Claire Planning Commission public hearing on the draft of the sustainability chapter is set for 7 p.m. tonight in the Council Chamber at Eau Claire City Hall. "Sustainability is a priority on our campus and we are pleased that it's also a priority for the Chippewa Valley," said Dr. Kate Hale, UW-Eau Claire's sustainability fellow. "Our city planners sought community input to help identify ways to increase our efforts to create a more sustainable future. Many members of the campus community stepped forward to be part of the process and our city planners welcomed their contributions." Event to celebrate Hmong community's past, future "Besides the fact that this is the 20th anniversary of the fellowship banquet, April 9 also marks the day when the very first Hmong family arrived in Eau Claire 33 years ago," Lee said. "Several people who have been instrumental in working with the Hmong community during this time will reflect on the past and the changes that have occurred over the years, while the new executive director of the HMAA will speak about plans and goals for the future." Four students at UW-Eau Claire have been recognized for their work on a radio program that discusses the influence of culture on communication. The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association honored a segment of "Culture Talk" with a second place award in the Public Affairs/Talk Show (Radio) category at the WBA Student Awards for Excellence ceremony in March. The episode featured an interview with UW-Eau Claire international student Anna Bakhtiyarova, a graduate student from Ukraine who is in the communication sciences and disorders program. "Culture Talk," part of a UW-Eau Claire student-faculty collaborative research project, is produced by seniors Nessa Severson, Anne Moser and Pierce Koch and sophomore Joe Tierney. Dr. Judy Sims, professor of communication and journalism, serves as faculty adviser. "Culture Talk" broadcasts will be featured on WUEC-89.7 FM from 6-7 p.m. every Sunday through May 17. Full story. UW-Eau Claire will no longer hold an August commencement ceremony, Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich announced last week.
The Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps is establishing a partnership with UW-Eau Claire to provide a one-year pilot program on campus, Interim Provost Marty Wood said.
This year's event will be special for several reasons, said Caitlin Lee, Hmong Mutual Assistance Association board president and equal opportunity specialist in UW-Eau Claire's Affirmative Action office.
UW-Eau Claire athletics is in 10th place out of more than 420 NCAA Division III institutions following this winter’s final Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings, National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics officials have announced.
