Committee announces finalists for vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students

The search and screen committee for UW-Eau Claire's vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students has announced four finalists for the position.

The finalists will make campus visits Tuesday, April 29, through Monday, May 5, during which the campus community will have the opportunity to listen and speak to each candidate during an open forum in Davies Theatre. The topic for candidate presentations will be "How will Student Affairs support student learning and the UW-Eau Claire Strategic Plan?"

The complete list of finalists and their open forum dates are as follows:

• Beth Hellwig, dean of student services at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. Visiting Tuesday, April 29.

• Calvin D. Phillips, associate vice chancellor for student affairs at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, N.C. Visiting Thursday, May 1.

• Gar E. Kellom, vice president for student development and director of the Center for Men's Leadership and Service at Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minn. Visiting Friday, May 2.

• Celestino Jose Limas, chief student affairs officer and dean of students at Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis. Visiting Monday, May 5.

Student researchers to fill Zorn Arena April 28-29

More than 400 students from disciplines across campus will present the results of their research and creative projects today and Tuesday, April 29, during UW-Eau Claire's 16th annual Student Research Day. The Student Research Day poster session in Zorn Arena will be open to the public from noon-5 p.m. today and from 8 a.m.-noon Tuesday. Student presenters will be with their posters from noon-4 p.m. today to answer questions and discuss their work.

"I have worked with many student researchers, yet every year when I walk into Student Research Day I'm amazed by the amount and quality of their work," said Dr. Karen Havholm, assistant vice chancellor for research and director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. "Visitors will be impressed by what our students have accomplished." Full story.

Bredle to succeed Frankenberger as IRB chair

Dr. Don Bredle, associate professor of kinesiology, has been named the next chair of UW-Eau Claire's Institutional Review Board.

This summer Bredle will assist psychology professor and current IRB chair Dr. William Frankenberger. Bredle then will officially assume the duties of chair at the start of the fall 2008 semester, said Karen Havholm, assistant vice chancellor for research and sponsored programs, who directly oversees the IRB chair. Frankenberger, who has been IRB chair since August 2001, will then be available for consultation to the new chair until his December 2008 retirement.
 
"The IRB chair must ensure the protection of human subjects while striving to facilitate the IRB review process so it doesn’t present an unreasonable obstacle for researchers," Frankenberger said. "Our IRB committee has made an effort to provide timely protocol reviews for researchers who are often operating under significant time constraints."  

Frankenberger noted that the workload of the IRB chair and committee has more than doubled during his tenure in the position.

"Bill Frankenberger has performed in an extraordinary manner in his role as IRB chair," said Dr. Steven Tallant, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. "He has overseen the IRB in a period of significant growth and has been vigilant in protecting the interests of human research subjects.

"Now we're very fortunate that Don Bredle will assume this very important role. Dr. Bredle's firsthand knowledge in his area will serve our university well."

Bredle, a UW-Eau Claire faculty member since 1997, received his master's degree and doctorate in exercise physiology from Indiana University. He teaches and advises students in the area of human performance and is co-director of UW-Eau Claire's Community Fitness Program. His areas of research include exercise physiology and alcohol metabolism in relation to performance and body composition.

Student spotlight

Nicole Chejade

• Senior receives grant to attend conference at Center for Spanish Language Media: UW-Eau Claire senior Nicole Chejade is one of only 30 graduating seniors from around the country to receive a grant to attend the second annual Media Sales Institute at The Center for Spanish Language Media at the University of North Texas.

Chejade will attend the Media Sales Institute June 1-13, two weeks after she expects to earn a bachelor's degree with a double major in mass communication-public relations and Spanish with a business emphasis. Full story.

• Political science students receive Karl Andresen Awards: Political science major Timothy Vander Kamp was recently awarded the 19th annual Karl Andresen Scholarship for the 2007-08 academic year. The $5,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating senior who demonstrates great potential for success in graduate or law school.

Three junior political science students — Elizabeth McNabb, Kendal Gregg and Jean Guthrie — also were recognized with Karl Andresen Outstanding Political Science Paper Awards. Full story.

Arists Series presents 'The Belle of Amherst' tonight

Ginger Grace as Emily Dickinson in 'The Belle of Amherst.'

"The Belle of Amherst," William Luce's one-person play starring Ginger Grace as the beloved poet Emily Dickinson, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. April 28 in Schofield Auditorium at the UW-Eau Claire. The play concludes this season's Artists Series.

A pre-event dessert discussion with Grace, hosted by Allyson Loomis of the UW-Eau Claire department of English, will be held in The Dulany of Davies Center from 6-7 p.m. Tickets for the discussion are $5 in advance or at the door. See full story for complete performance and ticket information.

Student Development and Diversity Recognition Awards honor faculty, staff students

UW-Eau Claire faculty, staff and students who have gone to extraordinary lengths to help students and colleagues reach their potential were honored April 16 during the Student Development and Diversity Awards reception. Researchers study male-female friendships

Middle-aged adults who are less satisfied in their current romantic relationship consider attraction and flirtation as important reasons to maintain friendships with people of the opposite sex, according to researchers at UW-Eau Claire.

"Although middle-aged adults reported less attraction overall to their cross-sex friends than did young adults, those who did report being attracted romantically to their friends were less satisfied with their current mates," Dr. April Bleske-Rechek, assistant professor of psychology, said of a study she completed with student researchers. "I think this is a significant finding."

Bleske-Rechek and student researchers will share their findings from the "Attraction in Young Adults' and Middle-Aged Adults' Cross-Sex Friendships" project, as well as several other research projects, during the 80th annual Midwestern Psychological Association conference May 1 in Chicago. Excursion class provides diversity experience
Learning to critically examine the complexities of race, class and gender, as well as how these differences may impact a child's experience in school, is an important lesson education majors learn during an excursion class offered twice a year at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, according to faculty.

During winter and spring breaks, students enrolled in "Social Foundations of Human Relations" visit schools in Washington, D.C.; Aldine, Texas; and, most recently, to Sumter, S.C. In these communities, UW-Eau Claire students are immersed in schools that are ethnically and racially diverse.

The thing all three locations have in common is a shortage of qualified teachers, said Dr. Jill Pinkney Pastrana, an associate professor of education who teaches the class.

"It so powerful for our students to realize that the differences are ultimately insignificant and don't preclude them from being effective professionals in various settings," she said. Full story.

Theatre department presents 'The Underpants'
The UW-Eau Claire theatre department's production of "The Underpants," directed by associate professor of theatre arts Richard Nimke, will open at 7:30 p.m. May 1 in Riverside Theatre. Additional evening performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 2-3 and May 7-10. A matinee performance will be at 1:30 p.m. May 4.

"The Underpants" is an adaptation by Steve Martin of Carl Sternheim's classic satirical play. Theo Maske, a conservative civil servant, fears he will lose his job and will be disgraced after his wife Louise's bloomers fall down in public. Fortunately for Theo, the incident does not cost him his job but instead brings boarders for the extra room he plans to rent. The two male boarders, one a poet and the other a Jewish barber, are both infatuated with Louise after the incident. Oblivious to their amorous objectives, Theo splits the room between them, happy to collect rent from both. See full story for cast, crew and ticket information.

May 9 Early Birdie Golf Outing to benefit WYSP
The 2008 Early Birdie Golf Outing will take place May 9 at Princeton Valley Golf Course as part of UW-Eau Claire's annual Rec Fest.

Proceeds from the outing will support the Wisconsin Youth Sports Program, formerly the National Youth Sports Program, an award-winning summer program for boys and girls ages 10-16 held annually on the UW-Eau Claire campus.

Participants must register by noon on May 8 at the Hilltop Recreation Center on upper campus. Full story.
