Diversity workshops with Dr. Joy Mighty

Dr. Joy Mighty

Dr. Joy Mighty, director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, will present two sessions of a workshop for UW-Eau Claire faculty and teaching academic staff on Tuesday, March 6. The interactive workshop, titled "Teaching for Inclusion: Implications of Diversity for Teaching and Learning at the University," will take place from 9-11 a.m. in the Presidents Room of Davies Center and again from 2-4 p.m. in the Alumni Room of Davies Center. Workshop/consultations on assessment plans for programs and departments
Academic Affairs and the Network for Excellence in Teaching will sponsor a workshop titled "Developing Assessment Plans for Programs and Departments" on Friday, March 9, from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center. The workshop will be led by Barbara E. Walvoord, chair of the Provost's Advisory Committee on Assessment at the University of Notre Dame. This workshop has been rescheduled from its original date of Feb. 23.

Walvoord will discuss feasible, practical and simple strategies for assessing student learning outcomes at programmatic and departmental levels. Workshop participants will receive a copy of her book "Assessment Clear and Simple." To register for the morning workshop, send e-mail to NET@uwec.edu by March 5.

Walvoord also will conduct individual departmental assessment plan consultations with preregistered departments from 1-4:30 p.m. March 9 in the Tamarack Room.

Due to great demand for these individual consultations, Walvoord will return to UW-Eau Claire Friday, March 30, for a full day of departmental consultations in Old Library 1122.

Fifth annual Dinner Party set for March 14
In 1979 feminist artist Judy Chicago first exhibited “The Dinner Party,” a work of art commemorating the overlooked and understudied achievements of women from prehistory to the 20th century.

In the spirit of Chicago’s piece and to commemorate this year’s Women’s History Month, the UW-Eau Claire community is invited to join a Potluck Dinner Party Wednesday, March 14, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Hibbard Penthouse. Participants are asked to:

        • Pick a historical woman you think deserves more visibility.
        • Come willing to share what you know about her.
        • Dress up and come prepared to be “in character” (optional).
        • Faculty/staff are asked to bring a dish to share (beverages will be provided).

Curricular redesign grant proposals sought
The Network for Excellence in Teaching announces the availability of curricular redesign grants sponsored by the UW System.

Faculty and academic staff are invited to submit proposals that will advance the innovative use of technology for teaching and learning, and/or for proposals related to faculty and instructional development in the effective use of technology in teaching and learning. Collaborative multi-institutional projects within and across disciplines are preferred.

All applications must be signed by Donna Raleigh, the UW-Eau Claire Learning and Technology Development Council representative, prior to submission. The deadline to submit proposals to the UW System is March 16.

Call for nominations for faculty vacancies
on university committees
The University Faculty Nominating Committee is seeking nominees for vacancies on the following university committees to be filled in the 2007 spring election.

UW System Institute on Race and Ethnicity to sponsor conference on immigration
The UW System Institute on Race and Ethnicity, in collaboration with the UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education, will sponsor a conference titled “Immigration: Many Faces; Many Facets” April 26-27 at the UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education in Milwaukee.

The interdisciplinary conference will feature presentations on research initiatives, curricular developments, pedagogical practices, outreach activities, policy initiatives and community involvement on an array of topics dealing with U.S. immigration and the socialization of immigrants into the American cultural, political and economic milieu. UW-Eau Claire presenters will be Kate Reynolds and Dale Gable of the department of foreign languages.

Bruce Taylor has been chosen as the final judge for the 2007annual poetry award sponsored by Wisconsin People and Ideas, a publication of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters.

Foreign Languages
Julie Adler and Beth Kozbial Ernst, along with Charles Schroen of Georgia Perimeter College, presented "Using Multimedia Weblogs in ESL Classrooms" at the Third International Online Conference on Second and Foreign Language Teaching and Research, held March 2-4.

Geography and Anthropology
Sean Hartnett was selected as the U.S. representative for a nine-person international media tour of Kenya, which was sponsored by the International Association of Athletics Federations, the governing body for track and field. The eight-day Kenyan Running Legends tour, held Feb. 18-25, spent extended time with Kip Keino, Paul Tergat, Moses Tanui and Brother Colm O’Connell, the coach for many Olympic medalists. The delegation was introduced at the nationally televised Kenyan Sportspersons of the Year award banquet. Hartnett also was acknowledged for his extensive photographic and journalistic contributions to Kenya’s leading sports magazine, The Athlete.

Harry Jol, Paul Bauman (WorleyParsons Komex) and Dan Bahat (Bar Ilan University) co-authored a paper titled "Looking into the Western Wall, Jerusalem, Israel." The paper was presented at the 11th International Conference on Ground Penetrating Radar June 19-22, 2006, at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and published in the conference proceedings on CD-ROM.

Geology
J. Brian Mahoney, Peter Mustard (Simon Fraser University), J.R. Goodin (Simon Fraser University) and UW-Eau Claire alumna Kate Maclaurin co-authored a presentation titled "Stratigraphic Analysis of Cretaceous Strata flanking the Southern Nechako Basin: Constraining basin Architecture and Reservoir Potential," which was presented at the 2007 Cordilleran Roundup Jan. 29 in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. The Roundup is an annual professional symposium that focuses on the geology and mineral potential of British Columbia, Yukon and Alaska.

Learning and Technology Services
Rick Mickelson had two winning photos in the January University Photographers Association of America image competition. His photo "Losing My Edge" was a first-place winner in the personal vision category, and "Symposium Preview of Chicago Skyline" was a second-place winner, also in the personal vision category. Condolences
Condolences to the family of Anna Marie Craemer. Craemer, who worked as a member of UW-Eau Claire's classified staff for 40 years until her retirement in 1982, died Feb. 26 in Eau Claire. Full obituary.
