Commencement exercises to honor 1,174 graduates

Spring commencement exercises for 1,174 students at UW-Eau Claire will be held May 21 in Zorn Arena. Candidates from the College of Arts and Sciences and candidates for master's degrees will receive degrees during a 9:30 a.m. ceremony. Candidates from the College of Business, College of Education and Human Sciences and College of Nursing and Health Sciences will receive degrees during a 2 p.m. ceremony. Dr. Donald Mash, UW-Eau Claire chancellor emeritus and executive senior vice president, UW-System, will deliver the "Charge to the Class" during the morning and afternoon ceremonies.

A reception for graduates and guests will follow each ceremony on the Central Campus Mall. If it rains, the reception will move to the Spruce-Tamarack Room of Davies Center. Tickets are required for admission to the morning and afternoon ceremonies. Additional information for degree candidates and guests is available online. Full story.

• Margaret Barnard, preschool teacher in the UW-Eau Claire Children's Center
• Gary E. Bartlett, administrative program manager III emeritus
• Wilma Clark, associate dean emerita of student affairs and graduate studies in the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of English
• Bruce Dybvik, distance operations specialist in the Teaching and Learning Technology Development Center
• Stanley Ediger, instructional program manager in the Mathematics Lab and senior lecturer emeritus in mathematics
• Patricia Garber, associate professor emerita of adult health nursing

The UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association honored the following 15 students at an awards luncheon May 11 in Davies Center:

Six to receive Alumni Association awards Saturday

The UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association will present awards to six alumni and friends of the university May 21 at a special luncheon and ceremony in conjunction with commencement. Donald J. Mash and Dean Olson will receive the Honorary Alumnus Award, presented to nonalumni who have demonstrated great love of and service to UW-Eau Claire. Michael Cleary '85 and Jerome Laurent ' 61 will receive the President's Award, which recognizes outstanding professional or personal achievements or service to UW-Eau Claire. Carl G. Wahl '74 will receive the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award, which recognizes distinguished service to the community, state or nation that brings credit upon the recipient and the university. Melissa Spagnolo Sherman '93 will receive the Outstanding Recent Alumnus Award, which acknowledges special achievements and great promise of alumni who are within 15 years of their graduation from UW-Eau Claire. Student receives 2005 Classified Staff Scholarship

Alyece Hartman, a UW-Eau Claire freshman elementary education major from Bloomer, is the recipient of the 2005 Classified Staff Scholarship. Hartman was nominated for the $500 scholarship by Cynthia Nevin, program assistant in the Student Development and Diversity office. Hartman is pictured at right with Nevin and Tim Candell of the Classified Staff Scholarship Committee. Each year, any permanent classified staff member may nominate an eligible student for the award, and the recipient is randomly selected from the pool of nominees. First Classified Staff Grant Fund scholarship
to be awarded in fall 2005

Both Susie Warden and Linda Haag completed bachelor's degrees at UW-Eau Claire while working as full-time members of the university's classified staff. Now both women support the Classified Staff Grant Fund to make certain other classified staff members have a similar opportunity to earn a college degree. This fall Warden and Haag will have the pleasure of witnessing the first award from the Classified Staff Grant Fund, which Warden created in 2003 with a gift of her Classified Staff Excellence in Performance Award money and to which Haag has pledged support in her estate plans. Interested UW-Eau Claire classified staff members who work at least half time and are attending UW-Eau Claire should apply for the fall semester scholarship by July 1. Full story.

Women's golf team has best finish in university history The UW-Eau Claire women's golf team had its highest finish in school history when it tied for third place at the NCAA Division III National Championship May 13 in Southern Pines, N.C. The Blugolds shot a 335 on the tournament's final day and a 1337 for the tournament to tie with DePauw University for third place. UW-Eau Claire stayed consistent throughout the championship with a low round of 332 and a high round of 336.
