Many Blugold fans turned out for the traditional alumni pre-game Homecoming festival in Carson Park, where there was food and beverages and music by the UW-Eau Claire Marching Band.	Jodi Thesing-Ritter, associate dean of student development, and her daughters, get in the Blugold spirit during the pre-game festivities.

Junior running back Joe Gast goes up and over for his fourth touchdown of the game in a 37-15 Homecoming triumph over UW-River Falls . Gast rushed for 135 yards on 30 carries as the 21st-ranked Blugolds scored 30 unanswered points in the third and fourth quarters to put the game away. UW-Eau Claire inducts eight into Alumni Hall of Honor
Eight UW-Eau Claire alumni were inducted into the university's Alumni Hall of Honor during an on-campus luncheon Friday, Oct. 1. The Alumni Hall of Honor recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of alumni from the university's four colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Human Sciences, and Nursing and Health Sciences.

The 2004 College of Arts and Sciences honoree is Carole Fairbanks '71, UW-Eau Claire professor emerita of English.

College of Business honorees are David Elsen '87, product manager for information technology, Schneider National Inc., Green Bay; Brian Johnson '80, executive vice president, Michels Corp., Brownsville; and Lois (Slaby) Krause '76, partner, Wipfli LLP, Eau Claire.

College of Education and Human Sciences honorees are James Dimock '75, assistant superintendent for curriculum and staff development for the Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District; Bradley Sherman '75, retired director, UW Health-Research Park Clinic, Madison, and former director of the UW Hospital Sports Medicine Center; and Kaying Xiong-Vue '96, principal, Locust Lane School, Eau Claire.

The College of Nursing and Health Sciences honoree is Nancy Fugate Woods '68, dean of the School of Nursing and professor of family and child nursing at the University of Washington, Seattle. Full story.

Adopt-a-Block neighborhood clean up a success

Twelve teams of UW-Eau Claire students helped clean up the Historic Randall Park neighborhood Sunday, Oct. 3, as part of the Homecoming festivities last week.

The student teams competed to pick up the most garbage in their designated areas. The winners were: first place, Governors residence hall; second place (tie), Bridgman and Towers residence halls; and third place (tie), Beta Upsilon Sigma business fraternity and Sutherland residence hall.

Other groups involved in the clean up included The Singing Statesmen, Student Senate, Putnam and Oak Ridge residence halls, Sigma Sigma Sigma social sorority, the Organization of New Entrepreneurs and Women's Concert Chorale.

Theresa Wells honored for work as mentor to students
Theresa Wells, senior lecturer of management and marketing at UW-Eau Claire, is the recipient of the National American Production and Inventory Control Society Student Chapter Mentor Award.

The award honors an operational management professional who has positively affected the lives of students and shown a commitment to the APICS vision, said Robert Sutton, chair of the management and marketing department at UW-Eau Claire. It will be presented to Wells next week at the APICS International Conference and Exposition in San Diego.

"Through this award APICS recognizes the unequaled dedication necessary to be a successful and influential role model," Sutton said. "It gives Terry the recognition she so deserves for the many hours and all of the work she has put into advising her students and the student APICS chapter." Full story.

Grant writer to serve UW-Eau Claire, Eau Claire Schools
Laura Short has been hired for a new grant writer position that is jointly funded by the Eau Claire Area School District and the College of Education and Human Sciences at UW-Eau Claire.

Short assumed the position Sept. 13. She will provide leadership for initiating, developing, securing and administering public and private external grants and be a resource to university and school district personnel seeking grants. Full story.

UW-Eau Claire to host international roundtable on international policy and presidential election
An International Roundtable discussion titled "The Bush Policy of Preemption, Iraq and the 2004 U.S. Presidential Election" is slated for 4 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Presidents Room of Davies Center.

The event, sponsored by the Center for International Education, will be moderated by Steven Majstorovic, associate professor of political science. Full story.

Salute to Big Band era set for Friday and Saturday
The UW-Eau Claire department of music and theatre arts will present "A Salute to the Big Band Era: 60th Anniversary Tributes, 1944-2004 and 1945-2005" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, and 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, in Zorn Arena.

This year's event is dedicated to veterans of World War II, and they are especially invited to attend, along with all Big Band lovers, alumni and friends of UW-Eau Claire.

This special afternoon or evening of music and dancing will feature a centennial tribute to Glenn Miller (1904-1944), who left behind a highly successful civilian career to volunteer for the armed services in 1942. He organized the Glenn Miller Air Force Band in 1943, and that band gave more than 800 performances for troops in England. The world lost this innovative and influential musician on Dec.15, 1944, when a transport plane carrying Miller to Paris disappeared somewhere over the English Channel.

Both performances will include a pre-concert social hour, from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. for the Friday evening performance and from noon to 12:45 p.m. for the Saturday matinee. Full story and ticket information.

Ballet Gran Folklorico de Mexico to perform at
UW-Eau Claire
Ballet Gran Folklorico de Mexico will present an evening of Mexican dance, music and culture as part of the Artists Series at UW-Eau Claire Tuesday, Oct. 12.

The swirling and rhythmic display of Mexico's ancient and modern traditions of folklore and dance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.

Described by The New York Times as "one of the most beautifully costumed folk-dance companies to appear in New York in recent memory," the 35-member company from Mexico City draws its audience into the history of Mexico from ancient cultures through the 20th century.
