Sasser worm
help available
A part of the campus network was affected May
3 by the Sasser worm, which infects Windows XP and 2000 machines. The
virus has been removed from all university computers, and updates have
been installed to protect the system from future Sasser threats. However,
students, faculty and staff should take action to protect their personal
computers, whether in the residence halls or off campus. Even those
whose computers have not been infected with Sasser should install the
Windows update to prevent future security threats.
Defense against this virus is available from CNS as
well as from the Microsoft Web site. If your computer is or may be already
infected, you must take steps to first remove the worm from the system.
To download the Sasser removal tool and the Windows security update,
visit ResCom
(Residence Hall Computing) or CNS
Help Desk Downloads. Make sure to download both the Sasser removal/repair
tool and the Windows XP/2000 security patch.
If you are unable to download these files to your
infected computer, CDs with the necessary tools are available through
ResCom. If you need help off campus, contact the CNS Help Desk, Old
Library 1144, at 836-5711.
For more information about protecting your computer from general security
threats, visit this Microsoft
Web site.
UW-Eau Claire to graduate
its first online MBA class
 |
| Evgeny Dobrovolsky, an international
student from Russia, will graduate May 22 with his master’s
degree in business administration. |
When Suzanne DeCann visits the UW-Eau Claire campus
for the first time in May, it will be to pick up her newly earned master
of business administration degree.
DeCann, who lives in Georgia, will be among the first 11 UW-Eau Claire
students to earn their MBAs completely online. When she comes to Eau
Claire for commencement, she’ll get her first real look at the
campus and her first opportunity to talk face-to-face with her classmates
and professors.
Since 2002, UW-Eau Claire MBA students have had the option of completing
the entire MBA program online, the entire program on campus or combining
the two options as it meets their needs.
“The online option gives our MBA students choices they never had
before,” said Robert Erffmeyer, MBA program director. “Our
students can complete a 30-credit online program in about two years,
and they can do it on their schedule instead of ours. There is no set
clock time during which they must do their work and they don’t
need to travel to campus, so they can literally be anywhere in the world.

Web site
redesign preview now available
A prototype offering a limited number of redesigned
upper level pages of the UW-Eau Claire Web site is now available online.
The work group chartered to redesign the upper level pages has finalized
design, navigation and technical considerations. Content development
is ongoing and staff members are encouraged to check the site periodically
for updates.
Following an initial prototype review period, it is
anticipated the redesign will be completed in the coming weeks. If all
goes as planned, the new Web redesign will “go live” prior
to the eight week Summer Session, which begins June 12.
The redesign has been presented to a number of groups
on campus that represent faculty, staff, students and administration,
and their suggestions have been taken into consideration as the redesign
has progressed. Your feedback also is welcome. Comments
can be submitted via the Web.
Members of the Web redesign work group include
Lillian Hillis and Brian Hogan, Computing and Networking Services; Mindy
Merryfield and Mari Jo Janke, Publications; Michelle Karstensen, Records
and Registration; Judy Berthiaume, News Bureau; and Mike Rindo, University
Communications.
