Recent graduate receives Fulbright for research, teaching in Turkey and Austria
Jenna Cushing-Leubner, Menomonie, a December 2005 UW-Eau Claire English and German graduate, will leave this week to begin the first part of a two-part Fulbright Award she was notified she had received this spring. Cushing-Leubner, daughter of Joan Cushing and Chris Leubner, received a combination research and teaching grant for travel to Vienna, Austria, as well as a supplemental Fulbright Language Training Initiative grant to study Turkish, which is critical to the research she will conduct in Austria. Full story. Cushing-Leubner and Amanda Hill, a May 2005 UW-Eau Claire graduate, are two of more than 1,200 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad for the 2006-07 academic year through the Fulbright Student Program. (See June 22 news release about Hill's Fulbright Award.) UW-Eau Claire has had six successful Fulbright applicants since 2000.

Dr. Richard H. Egdahl, son of the late Harry Egdahl, a longtime Eau Claire dentist, and his deceased first wife, Cassandra Ball Egdahl, has committed $100,000 to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's Cassandra Ball Egdahl Music Scholarship. The scholarship was created in 2003 with a bequest from Harry Egdahl's estate following his death at the age of 107. The fund provides scholarships to students who participate in the UW-Eau Claire Holiday Concert, the university's annual holiday gift to the community, which features various UW-Eau Claire music ensembles. Richard Egdahl graduated from Eau Claire High School and briefly attended UW-Eau Claire before enlisting in the Naval Reserve during World War II. He went on to graduate with a medical degree from Harvard University Medical School and a doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota. He has enjoyed a successful career as director of the Health Care Entrepreneurship Program and surgeon, administrator and researcher at Boston University's School of Medicine. Full story.
