Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full-combat sport that uses a wide variety of fighting techniques in competitions. The fighting techniques are derived from martial arts and are used standing or on the ground.
Though competitors come from a variety fighting backgrounds, the most common mixed martial arts techniques are jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, wrestling, and boxing.
No experience is required to join the MMA Club. The instructors use first few weeks of practice to teach members the basics of mixed martial arts. The techniques progress as all members gain comfort levels and experience.
The MMA Club holds practice two days per week. The days are Monday and Wednesday. A normal practice will run from 7 to 8:45 pm.
All practices are held in the UWEC wrestling room. The room number is McPhee 101. Members usually wear t-shirts and shorts to the practices.
The MMA Club participates in volunteering and fundraising activities.
Throughout the semester, club member volunteer time to help the community. The club usually helps non-profit organizations like the Boys and Girls Club. Specific volunteer time and locations are listed on the MMA Schedule.
The MMA Club also spends time fundraising. The funds are used to cut the costs associated with the club and to help purchase new equipment.
Dues are $10 for the fall semester and $10 for the spring semester. They are collected during the first couple weeks of practice.
The money is used to purchase equipment for the club. The clubs goal is to purchase a new piece of equipment each semester.
