Answer two
questions. For all of the questions on the Igbo, be sure to draw on the
information in all of the articles (on Concubinage, “Sitting
on a Man”, Proverbs and Nudity) as relevant as well as Things Fall Apart. Each
question is worth 20 points.
1. In what respects is Okonkwo typical of Igbo men? In what ways did he differ?
(In answering the question, discuss Igbo values, social and political
organization, etc. Include the reaction to the coming of the Europeans.)
2. Discuss the impact of
British colonialism on Igbo society. Include changes in the economy, politics,
religion, family. How did Igbo respond to the coming of the administrators and
missionaries? (Include the novel but don’t limit your discussion to the novel.)
3. Describe Igbo women’s
family, economic, political and religious roles. Comment on the relative power
and autonomy of men and women.
4. What seem to have been
the relative advantages and disadvantages of polygyny for men and women in the
traditional farming societies? How do attitudes toward polygyny seem to have
changed in current times?
