  • Journalism student aspires to be a copy editor

Most college students are somewhat annoyed when a fire alarm goes off in the dorms early in the morning, but sophomore Sara Schultz is reminded of home.

The 20-year-old Kewaunee native is used to beepers and alarms, since her dad is the chief of the Tisch Mills Volunteer Fire Department near her hometown.

"When I was growing up and my dad's pager went off at night, I'd wake up and listen to find out where and what type of fire it was," Schultz said. "The next day he'd tell me every little detail about the fire. I looked forward to those stories of his."

Schultz said she knew in 8th grade that she wanted to do something that involves writing. After researching different aspects of journalism she settled on copy editing. She currently works as a copy editor on the Spectator staff - a job which she said she enjoys, even though it is very time consuming.

When she's not working or studying, Schultz enjoys spending time with friends, listening to music and dancing. She also has a collection of flamingoes that she has been working on since she was about five.

"My collection consists of practically everything imaginable," she said. She even has a few lawn flamingoes.

Next fall Schultz plans on participating in the National Student Exchange. She will be attending Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where she will be continuing work on her majors in journalism and sociology.

After graduation Schultz hopes to get a job as a copy editor in either Colorado or the Midwest.
