Senior will pursue political science in graduate school
UW-Eau Claire Advanced Reporting Student Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001 Even though Steve Kosanovich plans to graduate from UW-Eau Claire in December 2002 with a print journalism degree, he isn't exactly sure what he will do with it. "I was a lot more clear about my future when I was a freshman," he said. Nonetheless, he is optimistic about his future. Kosanovich, 22, found out when he was two years into college and well into his degree that journalism wasn't quite what he expected. He liked the courses he was taking in political science better. "I realized (journalism) was what I didn't want to do," he said. "I didn't take any journalism classes for a year and took poly sci." But print journalism seemed like a good fit for Kosanovich when he first came to college. He enjoyed working at his high school newspaper in Watertown and thought the transition to studying journalism in college would make sense. "I've always read the newspaper -- more so than others I suppose," he said. But Kosanovich changed his mind about journalism soon after his Public Affairs Reporting, a journalism class, began. "It was when I had to cover a city council meeting," he said. "Going to these meetings and dealing with all this stuff just wasn't for me." But all the confusion about what career is the best fit doesn't get Kosanovich frustrated. He will finish his journalism major. "I can do this, it's not something I want to make a job out of, but I can do it," he said about his journalism degree. "I plan to take the things I've learned and do something with poly sci." He plans to move on to graduate school within a year after finishing his undergraduate degree. Where he wants to go to school is one more question Kosanovich has yet to answer for himself although he has already committed to leaving the state. "I spent 22 years in Wisconsin, and I definitely need a change," he said adding he would like to move to the East or West Coast. And through all of his decisions, Kosanovich's parents, John and Jean, have been supportive. "They've been cool with all sorts of things," he said. But when Kosanovich told his parents that he wasn't interested in making journalism a career, they reacted almost the same as he did. "They said, 'OK... so what are you going to do then?'" Kosanovich said. "I think I'll go to graduate school to find out," Kosanovich said was his reply.
