I am an associate professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism. I earned a Ph.D. in mass communication at the University of Maryland,
College
Park, in 1999 and a post-doctorate Fulbright Fellowship in media at McGill University in Montreal in 2008-09. My curriculum
vitae is available online, along with graphical, PowerPoint and textual
summaries of my dissertation. I've taught a challenging mix of media courses, ranging from Intermediate and Advanced Journalism to Research Methods to Mass Media Ethics, for which I am a co-author of a leading textbook and its website.
While in graduate school, I was one of the founding editors at the
Web's top-rated
news
site, washingtonpost.com. The complete texts and references for four

A few of my other passions in life include:
- Cheering on the Minnesota Twins and revisiting Camden Yards (right) to watch Baltimore Orioles games with my wife,
Sharon Kessler, who's an interactive media strategist for Minnesota Philanthropy Partners in St. Paul and president of the nonprofit Stone Bank Project.
- Taking bicycle trips with my wife. So far, I've ridden bike
across North Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Vermont. Nearly 10,000 bikers ride across Iowa
one week each July in
RAGBRAI.
- Visiting New York City's art museums, Broadway plays and, especially, the
NYC Ballet.
- Sailing in all manner
of wind. I used to race catamarans and sail by moonlight in Madison. Now I'm looking forward to sailing at the lakehome we are buying near Sharon's hometown of Bottineau, N.D. My motto is: "You can't
change the direction of the wind, but you can adjust your sails."
