"Feeding is Leading"

As a “Reading is Leading” program, the Gold Chaps Chapter of Mortar Board, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, prepared a meal at The Community Table, Eau Claire’s soup kitchen.  The menu on October 12, 2008 was Home Made Mac & Cheese, Coleslaw, Hotdog on a Bun with relish, ketchup, mustard & chopped onion, Carmeled Apple Slices, Cookies, Milk, & Children’s Books.

Clearly the last item on the menu, books, is one not seen very often in The Community Table’s kitchen.  Joseph Glatczak, the chapter president, was noted as saying, “While we made over 40 pounds of Mac & Cheese, about 130 hotdogs, and 12 pounds of Coleslaw, the best item on the menu was a book for each kid that came thought the line tonight!”

If you are wondering where the Gold Caps got all of these books, the answer is simple.  Prior to cooking, each member of the chapter was asked to donate a copy of their favorite children’s book or one that they wish they had when they were young.  With so much food and so many books there were plenty of leftovers for people to take home and for the Gold Caps Members to properly store away.  This means that about 20 pounds of Mac & Cheese was refrigerated for the next day and the leftover books were sent to “chill” on a children’s bookshelf that was recently started so that the children can continue to read new books when Mortar Board isn’t cooking up something good.

Even if you aren’t a good cook, the next time you have an extra children’s book lying around, and don’t know what to do with it, please consider taking it to your local soup kitchen since “Feeding is Leading” too.
