Mathematics Education at UWEC

Students obtain a degree in education through the School of Education in the College of Professional Studies. Degree programs in secondary education require students to complete either an academic Major and Minor, two academic majors, or a comprehensive major in an approved area. Students must complete a full semester of student teaching or an internship.

Major: Mathematics, Teaching - To prepare to teach secondary school mathematics, students take 36 semester credits, including the basic sequence in Calculus (Math 114, 215, 216) and Linear Algebra (Math 324), then Modern Geometry (Math 330) Probability and Statistics (Math 345), Abstract Algebra (Math 425) and a capstone course.  All Mathematics majors are required to take a computer science course.

Minor: Mathematics, Teaching - This compliments an academic major in another field. 24 semester credits, including Calculus I and II (Math 114 and 215) Linear Algebra (Math 324) Modern Geometry (Math 330) Mathematical Probability and Statistics (Math 345) and Abstract Algebra (Math 425).

Minor: Mathematics, Elementary Teaching - Compliments a Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education and prepares graduates to teach elementary and middle school mathematics.  Students take Calculus I and Introductory Statistics (Math 114 and 245), a sequence in the content, methods and curriculum of grades 1-9 (Math 203, 204, 305), and a selection of more advanced courses such as Discrete Mathematics (Math 314) Abstract Algebra or Number Theory (Math 322 or 341).
