PHILIP S. ZIVNUSKA SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship provides monetary assistance and motivation for independent mathematical research to a mathematics major with sophomore or junior standing. Selection is based upon scholastic excellence, a proposal for an independent study project and the successful completion of the project.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  1. be enrolled at UWEC for at least 6 semester credits in the term of the independent study project,
  2. have declared mathematics as a major (or minor),
  3. be of Sophomore or Junior standing, and
  4. have an overall and mathematics GPA of 3.25 or greater.

Application Procedure

To be considered for the scholarship, a student must complete a two-stage process:

  1. Complete an application that includes a proposal for an independent study project with one or more members of the Mathematics Department.  Forms are available in the Mathematics Department Office or online .
  2. After notification of the award, enroll in Math 399 for variable credit with the sponsoring faculty member within the next three semesters (spring, summer or fall).

SELECTION PROCEDURE

The Awards Committee will ask the faculty to contact students that satisfy the eligibility criteria and who they have identified as being likely to benefit from an independent study under their direction. After the Chair of the Awards Committee makes a formal request for applications, faculty will have one week to complete consultation with students, who then forward application materials, including an independent study proposal, to the chair of the Awards Committee.

Those faculty who have agreed to work with students on independent study are expected to attend the Awards Committee meeting at which the Zivnuska Scholarship winner is to be determined.

The Awards Committee will select a student depending on

  1. Previous academic accomplishments;
  2. Potential for growth and development from an independent study;
  3. Potential for sharing knowledge gained in an independent study by way of Math Retreat talks, presentations at MAA meetings, submitting an article to a journal, etc.

SELECTION DEADLINE

On or about December 1.
