Getting started

McIntyre Online Catalog: search the catalog for books, government documents, videos/DVDs/CDs Help

Business databases: These databases will be useful in all areas of your research, providing articles from thousands of business publications

News databases: Find articles on companies, industries, issues, etc., in regional, national and international newspapers. Newspapers can be especially useful for hard-to-find information on private companies and local companies. For local information, search the Leader-Telegram archives (click on "Online Subscriptions and Archives")

NAICS/SIC Correspondence tables: look up the NAICS or SIC code for an industry. These numbers, used to identify industries, are used in many other resources.

Company Information

International Directory of Company Histories: "Provides histories of companies that are a leading influence in a particular industry or geographic location." Type a company name in the search box.

Ward's Business Directory of U.S. Private and Public Companies: provides information on public and some private companies, including directory information, current and historical sales figures, officers, NAICS and SIC industry classifications.

LexisNexis Company Dossier: a wealth of information on companies, including financial data, company descriptions and industry classifications,, executives & board of directors, key competitors, parents & subsidiaries, news, legal issues and much more. Also includes reports, including histories, from Hoovers, SEC filings, and an option to compare companies

Datamonitor Company Profiles (via Business Source Elite): click on Company Profiles from the blue bar at the very top of the screen to get these comapny reports, which provide histories, executives, competitors and SWOT analyses.

Product/brands

Encyclopedia of consumer brands (Reference HF5415.3 .E527 1994): though dated, this source provides useful information and history on brands that have been around for awhile.

Simmons Choices III: this stand-alone CD product (located behind the Reference Desk) is a treasure trove of data on Americans' product, brand and media buying habits, from which you can create custom reports. Our academic version of this powerful program provides data from 2006.

Household Products Database: health and safety information on household products from the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services

Consumers

Lifestyle Market Analyst (Reference HF5415.33 .U6 L54 2008): Provides "extensive lifestyle information on the interests, hobbies, and activities popular in each geographic and demographic market."

American Factfinder (U.S. Census): The motherlode of demographic information for people in the U.S. Information on income, education, age, ethnicity, housing, family status and so much more at the national, regional, state, county, city, tract or block level.

Consumer Expenditure Survey (Bureau of Labor Statistics): "information on the buying habits of American consumers, including data on their expenditures, income, and consumer unit (families and single consumers) characteristics."

Business databases: Searching these databases using terms like "demographics," "consumers," "markets," in combination with a product or industry can be effective in locating consumer demographic information.

PsycInfo: Psychology database that is useful for finding articles on interpersonal communication, leadership, organizational behavior

Industry and Competitor Information

Stand & Poor's Industry Surveys (Reference HG 4965.S7): Detailed narratives and statistics on industries updated semi-annually. To locate an industry, consult vol. 1 for a list of industries with a corresponding date. Industry reports are arranged by date. Vol. 1 also includes an index of companies mentioned in industry reports.

Business Ranking Annual (Reference Desk HG4050.B88 2009): "Lists of companies, products, services, and activities compiled from a variety of published sources."

Market Share Reporter (Reference HF5410 .M35): compare a brand's market share to its competitors.

RMA Annual Statement Studies (Reference Desk HF5681.B2 R6): composite financial data, similar to Industry Norms (below), but including medians and quartiles instead of average figures to reflect a greater range of an industry.

Industry Norms and Key Business Ratios (Reference Desk HF5681.R25 I525): "Typical" balance-sheet figures for more than 800 SIC classifications, enabling the researcher to compare individual company data to industry norms.. A Dun & Bradstreet publication.

Economic Census: Find industry snapshots, industry ratios, state rankings and more, from the U.S. Economic Census (conducted every 5 years)

Current Industrial Reports Data from the U.S. Census on industry production and shipping. (Note that to see data in Excel format, you must click on tabs at bottom of screen).

Gale Directory of publications and Broadcast Media (Reference Z6951.A97): directory of newspapers, magazines, journals, radio stations, t.v. stations and cable systems in the U.S. and Canada. Includes subscription rates, circulation data some advertising rates and more.

Benn's Media (Reference Z6956.E5 M62): International directory of newspapers, periodicals, t.v., radio and online media.

LexisNexis Advertising Red Books (Reference HF5805.S7): Directory of advertising agencies as well as companies that spend at least $50,000 on advertising.
