Extended Daylight Savings Time &
Automated Calendar Appointments

The Impact of Early Daylight Savings Time

Daylight Savings Time (DST) will start three weeks early this year, on March 11, 2007, and end one week later on November 4, 2007. This extended DST period will impact the time display on computers and other electronic devices which otherwise automatically adjust for the traditional DST. It may also affect calendar items in Microsoft Outlook and other calendaring applications.

What LTS Is Doing

Windows Computers

During the weekend of February 24-25 LTS deployed an automated update to each campus Windows computer to adjust the time for each machine. As of Monday, February 26, the Time Zone Data Update Tool is available to you so you can run adjustments to any public folder calendars for which you are responsible.

Macintosh Computers

If you are using a Macintosh computer or the calendaring features within the Entourage email program, you will be contacted by the LTS Mac Support Team with further instructions. If you are a Macintosh user and have not heard from Mac Support by February 26th, please contact the LTS Help Desk for further information.

What YOU Need to Do:

On your primary calendar

Check the appointments for March 11 through April 1.

  • If you think that your primary calendar was not updated during the weekend of February 24-25, run the Time Zone Data Update Tool.

  • If your primary calendar was updated, but a few appointments appear incorrect, manually change those appointments.

On any resource calendars

This includes other calendars that you are responsible for (conference room, vacation schedule, etc.):

  • Run the Time Zone Data Update Tool on your computer IMMEDIATELY after receiving it.
NOTE: Do this when you are connected to the UWEC network, NOT when running in cached mode off campus on a laptop.
This tool will change the time of any appointments made to the designated calendar during the extended DST.
Look at the details of the appointments that will be changed.
Uncheck any that would cause errors.

Consider any appointments and meetings in the extended DST period to be suspect, especially any that may have been made from an off-campus computer. When in doubt, verify the correct time with the organizer.

For home equipment

Windows PC: Run Windows Update on your computer to get the correct updates to your operating system, if you haven’t already done it.

Macintosh: Instructions are available for applying the updates based on which version of the operating system you have..

PDA or other equipment: Check your support site or vendor to see if there is some type of update available for you to install.

More Detailed Information

If you are involved in meetings with external parties, UW – Eau Claire cannot confirm if external parties are DST patched or un-patched, therefore calendaring issues could occur. To help manage any meeting during the revised DST period, review the Calendaring Recommendations.
