Outlook Web App 2010 Has New Webmail Features

In the last few weeks, the campus Outlook Webmail accounts have been updated to Outlook Web App 2010, resulting in some new features and a dramatic change in appearance. One of the most exciting differences is that using a browser other than Internet Explorer no longer prevents you from using the full range of features in Webmail. The light version is now designed for computers with a slow connection and users with low vision, while the premium version supports most major browsers. And, Webmail now works on Macintosh computers!

After the September 3rd upgrade, Webmail is both faster and more customizable. Not enthralled with the default yellow background? You can choose something more to your taste, whether that means autumn leaves, cupcakes, or a simple blue background.

The default view for Webmail organizes messages into conversations based on the subject of the messages. This allows you to quickly review the discussion leading up the current message.

Not only can UW-Eau Claire staff members listen to voicemail messages left on their office phones through Webmail, staff can see their voicemail messages in text format. All users can also choose to receive text messages on their cell phones when an important email arrives.

To make scheduling easier, you can share calendars with on-campus as well as off-campus colleagues, allowing others to see when you are available. Distribution lists, including permissions to edit groups you own , can now be managed within Webmail (see accompanying article on website permissions). Instant messaging is also built into Outlook Web App 2010. This allows users to chat without downloading another program.
