Campus-Supported Anti-Virus Software for Home Use

LTS has made some changes to our policies regarding home-use anti-virus software. The campus has been using Symantec Anti-Virus on all University machines. Recently, LTS selected new products for campus machines. As such, this will require changes to the software that our students, staff, and faculty use at home.

Symantec Anti-Virus Will Be Discontinued

In the past, LTS distributed Symantec Anti-Virus to the campus community for home use. We will not be renewing our license with Symantec, and as such, will no longer be distributing it for home use. If you currently have a copy of Symantec Anti-Virus on your home computer that you’ve received from either the LTS Help Desk or ResCom, it will continue to work, but will not update reliably after the academic year ends.

New Products: Forefront for Windows, Sophos for Macintosh

For faculty and staff that need anti-virus software for new home computers or are interested in updating to our new software now, you may stop at the LTS Help Desk in Old Library 1106 to check out Microsoft Forefront for Windows and Sophos Anti-Virus for Macs. You can check out the installers for these products for 24 hours or over the weekend. Make certain you uninstall Symantec Anti-Virus or any other anti-virus products before installing Forefront or Sophos.

Free Anti-Virus Products Recommended for Students

For students, we unfortunately do not offer a direct solution as we once did. Instead, we recommend that students either purchase an anti-virus product or download some of the excellent free products available from various vendors. For specific information on some of the free anti-virus products that we recommend, please navigate to the LTS Help Desk's download page. LTS has had positive experiences using these products, but cannot support them directly.
