The campus’ Information Technology Commission (ITC) is responding to RIAA inquiries about student downloading with email warnings to students. Technical Services can pinpoint which on-campus machines are using suspiciously large amounts of bandwidth, suggesting not only peer-to-peer file sharing, but also spam, viruses, compromised computers, and other activities.
The user will receive an email warning that the campus is aware of the large bandwidth volume they are using. It will also contain links for more information or where to go for help. Emails will be sent daily until their bandwidth usage returns to typical levels.
This course of action went into effect Friday, January 11, and a few dozen emails have already been sent. For more information or feedback on this new bandwidth monitoring feature, contact Tom Paine (paineta).
