The Government Publications Department staff issues various research guides to help with access and use of document resources. The guides are in a rack near the elevator on the first floor of the library. Current guides available electronically include Guide to Superintendent of Documents Numbers [SuDoc numbers] and Government Publications in the Online Catalog.
Given sufficient lead time, the government publications librarian and/or other librarians will be happy to assist classroom faculty with the development of class assignments which use state and federal information resources. Handouts and worksheets targeted to specific course content can be created.
Upon request the government publications librarian will teach your students to identify, find and use government resources for their class assignments. Sessions can be taught in your classroom or lab, the library instruction rooms or lab or in the government publications area of the library.
Instructors are welcome to conduct their own classes in the Government Publications Department. Since space is limited, please call extension 36-3247 ahead of time to reserve the area for your class period.
Instructors anticipating short term, heavy use of selected resources may arrange for materials to be placed on temporary reserve at the library’s reference desk. Request this service ahead of time to prevent the first student from checking out the publication(s) needed by the entire class. Contact Mary Hayden at 836-3421 or haydenm@uwec.edu. Use the standard library reserve system for materials needed more than ten days.
Some government publications are issued in full text CD-ROM format. Many products have accompanying access software and/or printed documentation and are available for use at the Government Publications public access CD-ROM workstations. Users are encouraged to bring DOS-formatted disks for downloading. We request that printing from the CD-ROM products be limited to 10 pages. A workstation may be reserved ahead of time by calling 836-3859 or may be used on a first come, first served basis.
Many thousands of government publications are available to the public at state and federal websites. If you need assistance in locating or using electronic documents, ask for help at the library’s reference desk or arrange a consultation session with Mary Hayden at 836-3421 or haydenm@uwec.edu.
McIntyre Library is an affiliate of the Madison, WI center of this national network. If you need government-generated data not readily available in this library, arrangements can be made with the State Data Center to acquire the needed information. Diskettes, tapes, special computer searches and printouts are done on a cost recovery basis. Contact Mary Hayden at 836-3421 or haydenm@uwec.edu.
If you wish to suggest purchases for the state or federal collection, submit your recommendation to the library’s Collection Development Department. Please include as much bibliographic information as possible.
