We serve a number of different functions:
- Special Collections & Archives collects the historic records of the University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire and its predecessor institutions. The university archives contain:

- Administrative records
- Faculty papers
- Student & alumni papers and scrapbooks
- Yearbooks, campus newspapers, and other university publications
- Photographs of the university, some of which have been digitized in the University Photo Album
- As a Wisconsin Historical Society Area Research Center (ARC), Special Collections & Archives also holds local government records and manuscripts pertaining to the following counties:

- Chippewa
- Clark
- Eau Claire
- Rusk
- Taylor
- Our collections also include local history publications, such as:

- City directories
- Church and organizational histories
- County and city histories
- Genealogical reference books.
- Plat maps and Sanborn Insurance maps
- The university’s rare book collection, which is especially strong in first edition British and American fiction, is also housed in Special Collections & Archives.
- We mount exhibits in the McIntyre Library’s Grand Corridor that feature materials from our collections.
