In the first three modules the learner has learned about digital images and through the use of various software packages how to manipulate this visual data. In this last module the learner will look at the legal and ethical issues dealing with manipulating images and using images that were created by another person(s). Copyright is a body of guidelines governing the use of intellectual property of others. Within these guidelines is an area of educational Fair Use. This pertains to the use on another's property in the field of instruction and how that differs from copyright outside of instruction. Take a look at some of the information on these sites to familiarize yourself with the guidelines. Activity IThe scenario: A university publication office wants to show diversity at an athletic event for the cover of a promotional publication, so the head and shoulders of an African American student is "Photoshoped" into a crowd at an actual game. Discuss the implications of this act. Activity IIThe scenario: You are enrolled in an Art History course in which the instructor uses slides to show various artworks from the Middle Ages. He uses the same slides from semester to semester. What are the Educational Fair Use issues raised by the instructor's perennial slide shows. Activity IIIRead the following article, Digital Image Manipulation and Legal Issues, write a brief summary and include a personal reaction. |
