José A. Valero is a native of the Basque region in northern Spain, and an adoptive son of Madrid. He earned his licenciatura in Philosophy from the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid, and in 1986 he crossed el charco (the puddle) to do graduate studies at the University of Minnesota. He earned his Ph.D in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures in 1994, and then taught at the University of Oregon in Eugene and at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. In 1997 he joined the Department of Foreign Languages at U.W.E.C., and has been a member of the Latin American Studies Committee since 1999. At UWEC he teaches Spanish language and literature. His main area of research is the Spanish Enlightenment and Romanticism, although he has also published articles on Latin American literature and culture.
