Department of Foreign Languages
Carter Smith received his Ph.D. in Spanish literature and cultures from the University of Minnesota in the spring of 1999. He joined the UW-Eau Claire Foreign Language Department that following fall. He appreciates the opportunities to teach Spanish at all levels that a university like Eau Claire offers. He also enjoys getting to know students through extra-curricular events such as the Spanish Club, the International Folk Fair, and the Spanish Honor Society. His areas of scholarly research include contemporary Peninsular literature and culture, especially as it relates to urban culture and society. He has published various articles relating to the representation of urban space in the contemporary novel and a recent bibliographical piece on the literary work of Juan Jose Mills.
A Wisconsinite at heart, having grown up in Stevens Point, he enjoys being back in Packerland. He and his wife, Beth, a Spanish teacher in nearby Menomonie, and Abby, their dog, enjoy the biking and hiking that the Chippewa Valley offers; and, more importantly, the people they've come to know in the past few years.
