Biographical Sketch:
Marilyn Skrivseth is in her fifth year as the athletics director for men and women at UW-Eau Claire. She came to Eau Claire in 1979 as a physical education instructor and as the head women's tennis coach and assistant women's track & field coach.
Skrivseth took over as the Director of Women's Athletics in 1985 and headed the women's tennis team for 16 years until moving into her current position. Under Skrivseth's leadership, the Blugold athletics program has placed 10th and 8th the past two years in the Sears Director's Cup competition. The Blugolds successfully hosted the 1994 women's basketball Division III Final Four and the 1997 and 1999 Division III softball national tournaments and will again in 2001. Eau Claire has been a regional host for softball three consecutive years and has hosted women's basketball playoff games for eight straight years.
Skrivseth, a high school graduate of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, obtained her bachelor's degree in physical education at UW-La Crosse where she graduated with honors in 1973. As an athlete at La Crosse, Skrivseth competed in tennis, badminton, and volleyball. She earned her doctorate degree in administration from the University of Iowa in 1996.
A four-year stretch as a physical education teacher and as a tennis and track coach for West Bend High school followed her college graduation. Skrivseth took a one-year leave of absence to obtain her master's degree in physical education from the University of Oregon in 1977. When she returned for a fifth year at West Bend, her tennis team won the Little Ten Conference title and her track team won both the indoor and outdoor conference titles.
When she came to UW-Eau Claire, Skrivseth continued her dual sport success when she was named Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WWIAC) Coach of the Year in track and tennis in 1980-81. She received WWIAC Coach of the Year honors in tennis again in 1983-84, 1994-95 and 1995-96. As tennis coach, she led the Blugolds to five conference championships including three straight from 1994-96. She took a leave of absence from the university in 1986-87 to work on her doctorate degree at the University of Iowa.
At the university, conference and national levels, Skrivseth has served on numerous committees. She was the president of the WWIAC in 1989 and served as the tennis sports chair from 1980-82. Skrivseth also did consulting on sport equity issues in 1989 and has been an active voice in gaining equality for women's sports. Most recently, she completed a term as chair of the NCAA Division III Membership Services Committee. She has been inducted in the UW-La Crosse Wall of Fame and the NAIA District 14 Hall of Fame.
