ASSIGN 4 - GROUP PRESENTATION
SPEECH TO INFORM/ETHNIC DIVERSITY
CJ 202 KAPFER
Your next speech will be a
group presentation in the symposium style. There will be four groups. Members
of the group will give a presentation on the cultures, values, lifestyles
and/or contributions of a racial/ethnic group it has been assigned.
One
member (as designated by the group) will have the responsibilities of leader.
This person will not be required to
give a speech but will have other duties (see below). Each of the rest of the
members will write and present a speech to inform.
YOU WILL BE
GRADED BOTH AS A GROUP AND INDIVIDUALLY (100pts total).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Potential GENERAL
GROUP topics could include but are not limited to:
Artistic
accomplishment (painting, sculpture, architecture) Language and/or
communication behaviors or issues
Biographies
of important or notable people Musical/theatrical/other
media issues or contributions
Political
and/or Historical events Social/economic/environmental
issues or contributions
Religious/Spiritual
orientations
You can choose from the
topics suggested above or develop your own but your analysis must focus on the
ethnic group’s experiences within
the
AN EXAMPLE:
Ethnic Group: Japanese Americans
General Group topic: Religious/Spiritual Orientations: Religious
Influences on Japanese Americans During the 20th
Century.
Speech One: history and
characteristics of the predominant religion(s) of the ethnic group in
Speech Two: different
religious holidays practiced in the
Speech Three: prominent
religious leaders in
Some criteria to
consider:
-Within
the general ethnic group, you should narrow the focus to an even more specific
segment [e.g.:
Focus
on Mexican Americans instead of Hispanic Americans generally].
-If
you chose to speak about the lives of individuals within a particular ethnic
group, the emphasis should not just concentrate on the chronology of their
lives but, more importantly, on why they and their contributions are
important
as well as how they are related to the General Group Topic.
-Similarly,
if you chose to speak about particular events associated with an ethnic group,
you need to consider and
emphasize how/why they are important as well as how they
are related.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
FIRST REQUIREMENT
Each group must produce a one-two page written summary designating the group
leader and the members who will be giving speeches. The summary must also
include a description of the general
group topic and the specific focus of each individual speech. The group
must also hand in a draft outline of
how the presentation will be organized (who will speak when, on what subjects,
main points of each speech). The summary and draft outline are due MONDAY JUNE 30TH.
Final drafts of the group outlines are due on the
day of your group presentation. The group should also make enough copies to
hand out to the other members of the class. All of this is the responsibility
of the group leader.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
INDIVIDUAL SPEECH REQUIREMENTS (80 points)
Except
for the leader, members of the group will give speeches to inform. Each speech
will be graded according to the criteria needed for a speech to inform but
on a reduced 50 point scale. That is, it should have an introduction, body
(with an appropriate “order”) and conclusion with all the necessary
elements. The length of each speech will be between 5-7 minutes long.
As
with the other speeches, you will be need to develop and hand in an outline
(20 points), a reference list (10 points), and a written copy of your speech. Printed versions of these should be
given to the group leader who will organize them to be handed in collectively
in the binders provided. Group leaders should hand in the original outlines and reference lists given to them by
the other members.
POWERPOINT:
Each member must produce a Powerpoint display that will be
incorporated into a group Powerpoint and used during the group presentation.
You should create your display and give it to your group leader who will
collate it into a group display. The group
leader must email it to me so it is available on the day of your
presentation. You may use additional visual aids if you wish but the Powerpoint
is a requirement.
LEADER RESPONSIBILITIES (80 Points)
Designation of a group leader should be done no later
than TODAY (JUNE 26). The group
leader will have the responsibility of writing and submitting a one-two page
summary (10 points), a draft outline and a final outline (20 points) of the group
project.
The summary and
draft outline are due MONDAY JUNE 30TH.
Final outlines (and copies for the audience) are due
the day of the group’s presentation. Late group summaries and draft
outlines will mean a deduction of points for the group leader.
BE SURE TO IDENTIFY YOUR GROUP NUMBER
AND MEMBERS ON ALL WRITTEN MATERIALS.
FINAL GROUP OUTLINE REQUIREMENTS: This will be similar to a speech outline in that it
should identify the presentation purpose, topic, a general reason for choosing
the topic, each speaker and his/her topic, each speech’s main points,
elements of the presentation’s conclusion.
The
leader must also get the group together, keep it organized and on track during
meetings. You must keep and hand in a
list of meetings, their times and attendance. You will also gather and
organize group written materials to be handed including original printed copies of members’ outlines, speeches,
reference lists and printed sources.
ALL WRITTEN MATERIALS SHOULD BE ORGANIZED ACCORDING TO THE GROUP OUTLINE
AND BE
HANDED IN IN A THREE RING BINDER.
During
the presentation the leader will provide an introduction of the group’s
presentation generally (including a preview of each member’s speech), separately
introduce each member’s speech, present a general summary/conclusion
for the group presentation (including a review of each member’s speech),
