100
POINTS
These are due in lab Thursday OCT. 15th.
In your final audio project
of the semester you will tell a story for children using the three sound design
domains.
You have two options. I have some
children’s books in my office from which you can choose a story. You can come
to my office and look at them, choose one and check out the book for a
half-hour to photo copy a story and return the book.
Or you may use a different
children’s book/story if you wish but I must approve it before you start
work. When choosing a book, make sure to pick one that is conducive to the
assignment. That is, will it be long enough? Does the story provide opportunity
for various sound FXs and music?
You will use the story to put
together a FIVE to EIGHT minute
multi-track audio program using the three sound design domains: speech, music
and sound effects. YOU MUST USE ALL
THREE.
In fact you must use
-AT
LEAST TEN DIFFERENT SOUND EFFECTS
-AT
LEAST FIVE DIFFERENT MUSIC SEGMENTS
The way to approach this is
to map it out before hand using a “spotting sheet.” (Use of a spotting sheet is
required. We will talk more about these in lecture.) In other words, go through
the story line by line or paragraph by paragraph and determine what kind of
music, sound effects and/or voice you will need for each. Then start picking
out the music and sound effects you need, making wave files and recording voice
tracks. Undoubtedly you will need to create new files or make changes as you go
along. But that should be relatively easy with the multi-track.
A TYPED/PRINTED
DRAFT SPOTTING SHEET IS DUE IN MY OFFICE BY 3PM THURSDAY OCT. 8TH .
It should include, at least, an indication of where the required ten sound
effects and five music segments will go in the project.
You will have considerable
freedom in this endeavor. The narration voice and character voices (should you
decide to make them) can be your own or other
peoples’. Likewise the music and sound effects can all be of your own choosing.
You can use the music and sound FX libraries we have on the J drive, in the TV
lab or create your own.
But
remember your audience. You should
treat this as if it will be listened to by young children. So please make sure
everything is geared toward that audience.
As with your other multi-track project, you should
have already created sub-folders for the mix down and the session files. THEY
SHOULD BE LABELED AS “MIXDOWN (USERNAME)” AND “ SESSION
(USERNAME).” The session and all the files that go with it should be in the
“session” folder. The ONLY file in the “mixdown” folder should be the FINAL
MIXDOWN!!! I will copy the folders
from your main folder. This project will take up considerable memory and have a
lot of files. Be sure to label everything properly.
You will also need to hand in a FINAL spotting sheet that
describes the order and placement of your SFX, music and voice. As with all
written work, this must be typed. A blank spotting sheet is provided in the
241 folder on the W drive. Again everything is due in lab Thursday OCT.
15th.
As
always, if you have any questions, please ask.
