Participation, Attendance, and Classroom Etiquette:  It is imperative that students come to class, and better to come prepared.  While attendance does not specifically count toward students' grades, attendance becomes a factor for borderline grades.

As a measure of participation, students are to turn in brief reflections/questions that emerge from lecture each day at the end of class.  These will always be collected and sometimes used to count toward participation.  Reflections used to measure participation will range between 1-3 points, two absences will be permitted, and no more than 27 points are possible. To get credit, you MUST include your name, the date and a clearly written response germane to the subject of the day's lecture/readings/discussion.

While the number of students in our classroom makes class discussion somewhat difficult, it is possible.  Our goal is to create a comfortable setting for learning and inquiry.  Therefore, students are encouraged to ask questions and provide input (in an orderly fashion) as we explore issues and ideas.

In the same way, disruptive and disrespectful behavior and activities that detract from the classroom as a learning environment are unacceptable and can result in negative points.  As such, please remember to turn off cell phones, do not read newspapers and outside materials in class, laptops are not allowed without instructor permission, unplug musical gizmos from your ears and provide the teacher and your fellow students with the attention and respect we all deserve. If you want to sleep in class, do it upright -- otherwise you need to be in bed.

If you have any questions or concerns about your specific circumstances, please see or email me.  For example, there may be emergency situations where a cell phone must be left on or where you may need to leave class early -- please let me know in advance.

Special needs: Any student who has a disability and is in need of classroom accommodations, please contact the instructor and  the Services for Students with Disabilities Office in Old Library 2136 at the beginning of the semester. If you have special needs or concerns apart from disabilities, please see me. Please recognize that we cannot be of service if we do not know that there are unmet needs.

Campus/Community Events:  Students are required to attend three local, "international" events -- one per month.  One must be a shopping trip to one of the local Hmong or Mexican ethnic grocery stores. The others are to be campus events with an international focus, including talks, exhibits, special events. Of these, one can be one of the non-animated foreign films shown by the International Film Society (or the Progressive Film Festival). The film must subtitled for English speakers and be shown on the UWEC campus. Appropriate IFS films for Fall 2009 are The Class, Days of Glory, Waltz with Bashir, and Before the Rain).

For each of these three events, you are to respond using the on-line Event Review Form. These will be assessed based on thoughtfulness, thoroughness and clarity. Your event reviews must be completed before the last Monday of classes.

Homework assignments are to be turned in at the very beginning of class on the day that they are due.  They cannot, otherwise, be accepted without a penalty (-5% for each day). If you will not be in class that day, you may turn in the homework exercise early or have a friend submit it.  Emailed exercises will not be accepted unless arranged in advance or under special circumstances.  Only under extenuating and verifiable circumstances will homework be accepted late without penalty; if you have any questions about your specific circumstances, please see me.  Finally, for your protection, please be sure to retain an electronic copy of all homework.

Exams will be a combination of multiple choice, matching, true-false and anything else that can creatively and appropriately be answered on a scan form.  The final, while emphasizing the final third of the course, will be comprehensive.  Review materials have been provided for you on-line.

Academic Integrity. Any academic misconduct in this course is a serious offense, and I will pursue the strongest possible academic penalties for such behavior.  The disciplinary procedures and penalties for academic misconduct are described in the UW-Eau Claire Student Services and Standards Handbook (http://www.uwec.edu/dos/Codes/ch14.htm ) in Chapter UWS 14—Student Academic Disciplinary Procedures. Ignorance is not an excuse.
