The hike into Waipio Valley was an interesting
experience. The road is paved, but is built on a 25 percent
grade. It is one of the only few paved roads in the United
States that requires four wheel drive to get down and up. The
walk down lasted about 12 minutes and at the end of the walk,
everybody's quads were killing them.
On the walk down, there was a great example of
weathered basalt. As you walk along the basalt, the coloring
gets darker. The lighter color on top and darker on the bottom
of the basalt is a result of physical and chemical and weathering
processes
