The famous Aerial Lift Bridge links Park Point to Duluth. This bridge allows large Great Lakes freight ships to travel into Duluth Harbor. This harbor is the largest exporter for grain in the United States of America, and the Aerial Lift Bridge allows many of these ships easy entry and exit from the harbor. Due to engineering constraints, a contest was held to find a suitable design for a bridge spanning this channel. John Alexander Low Waddell devised the winning plan and the bridge became operational in 1905.
