SUBAQUEOUS INDUSTRAIL WASTE IN WESTERN WISCONSIN LAKES:
REDUCING/ REDIRECTING THE DREDGED MATERIALS FROM LANDFILLS.

By: Pat Dryer

Physical Setting

HML is geographically located in west central Wisconsin in the Chippewa River Valley (Figure 1). During the logging era logs were floated down the Chippewa River. Because of the close proximity to the Chippewa River HML was used for a holding pond for logs awaiting the milling process. HML is in close proximity to the Chippewa River because HML is an oxbow lake.
HML is a 153.4 acre Lake with relativity pristine vegetation surrounding the lake for a lake located in a city (Trombly, 2007). There are very few private residences located on HML but 85 % of the shoreline is forested and owned by the city of Eau Claire (WI DNR, 2004). HML is a valued recreational opportunity to the citizens of Eau Claire. Citizens enjoy fishing and canoeing on the lake. Marine motors are no longer allowed in HML.
