Day Seven

March 12, 2007

We woke up this morning and stopped at the Grand Staircase-Escalante visitor center.  From there we traveled west to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes.  At 9:27am we arrived at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park and spent some time discussing their formation.  We then headed towards Zion National Park.  Our first stop in Zion was Checkboard Mesa.  Our next stop was an area of research where we discussed and interpreted a cemented dune field.  Our third stop in Zion was at Watchman’s Overlook where a stunning view of Zion Canyon was laid out before us.  We then traveled down into the canyon and stopped again, at the visitor center, where we discussed the formation and processes that created Zion Canyon.  Our next stop took us to the Narrows of Zion Canyon, where Navajo Sandstone had been incised by the Virgin River creating a slot canyon.  The last stop was at the perennial flowing Weeping Rock.
