On Penny Hill and Snow Hill there is one primary package of dune sediment with no buried soil, indicating one phase of dune activity on each dune. To obtain the oldest date possible on the dune, samples for optically stimulated luminescence dating using near infrared light (IR-OSL) were taken on the upwind margin of each dune in steeply-dipping dune foreset strata, as illustrated.
