Black Sand Beach

Black Sand Beach was our first stop on September 25, 2001, located just south of Volcanoes National Park on Highway 11.  At the beach there were many picnic areas, pavilions, and restrooms.

Punalu'u offers swimming with the turtles, beautiful blue waters, which rise in harmony with the black pearl sand, and lots of exploring. This is a perfect place to take in a round of golf, at one of the most beautful courses on the Island.

Figure 3 shows  the size and shapes of the material that makes up Punalu'u Black Sand Beach.

The sand was formed by waves crashing into the shore eroding the lava flows down, creating what you see today.
