PHOTO 1: Lake Lahontan basin shorelines along Pyramid Lake basin.
Pyramid Lake, a pluvial lake, is one of Ancient Lake Lahontans remnants, formed from melt water during a
wetter period thousands of years ago. Ancient Lake Lahontan covered 8,450 square miles and was approximately 920 feet
at its deepest point, which was seventy-five times larger and ten times deeper then Pyramid Lake today. Lake Lahontan's
former shorelines can clearly be seen in photo 1.
