Summit

The trail to the summit at an elevation of 13,796 feet

  • Mauna Kea is the most sacred place to the people of Hawaii, specifically the summit. It is greatly respected from generation to generation.

  • For years and years, Hawaiians traveled to the summit for hunting, burials, and for solitude. It is tied to religions, spirits, and culture.

  • Astronomers were drawn to this area for a potential observatory location because of how optimal the conditions were for star gazing.

  • Since Mauna Kea is so well respected and sacred, there were many opposing feelings about having the observatories being located on the mountain itself.

  • In 1964, the first telescope was put up.

The scared alter

  • An alter was places on the summit in respect to the Mauna Kea and the Gods of the Heavens.

  • Lake Waiau, located on Mauna Kea, is the site where the Hawaiian people believe life began. People have come to this sacred area and placed the umbilical cords of their children here.
