Preparing for an Ice Storm

Since traveling is impossible during an ice storm, it is important to monitor local weather forecasts and begin preparations immediately when a storm seems likely.

The National Weather Service suggests that if a winter storm appears imminent in your area, make sure that you have:
· a flashlight and extra batteries
· a battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio and portable radio
· extra food and water
· extra medicine and baby items
· first-aid supplies
· heating fuel
· emergency heating source
· fire extinguisher and smoke detector
As with all storms, there is the potential to loose utility services such as gas, electricity and telephone. Make sure that you have a contingency plan in place to address being without essential utility services for several days.
