A species whose status provides information on the overall condition of the ecosystem and of other species in that ecosystem. They reflect the quality and changes in environmental conditions as well as aspects of community composition.

Effects of Deforestation on Indicator Species in the Brazilian Rainforest

The interaction between various forest species is vital to a species survival.

Fragmented forests due to deforestation leave many animal populations isolated which can lead to extinction.  With the deforestation rates on the rise within the past twenty years, many species are facing the threat of extinction.  By examining certain indicator species, an assessment of the rainforest's health can be determined. 

Below are two species whose populations have been affected by deforestation: The Big Leaf Mahogany and Peccary
