History of Deforestation in the Amazon

The reason why deforestation is occurring in Brazil is because of the competitive global economy. Brazil wants to use their resources to raise money for projects, to pay international debt, or to develop industry.

History

nIn the late 60s the Brazilian government and several other foreign nations, favored the development of cattle ranching in the Amazon to generate revenue during a period of high world beef prices as well as a means to eliminate world hunger
n

In the 70s Road projects, such as the Trans-Amazon Highway, opened up commerce, which increased activity in the Amazon

Brazil established programs similar to the 1862 homestead act in the U.S. that gave citizens land for free as long as they showed productive use. New roads translocated hundreds of thousands of Brazilian citizens deeper into the Amazon.
