BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Mt. Hood is located in the Cascade Mountain range, along the Pacific Coast of the United States and Canada. The range is famous for its scenic beauty and volcanic activity. In 1980, Mt. St. Helens erupted furiously. From this eruption, researchers have learned a great deal about volcanos and the hazards they present. This eruption also triggered more public awareness of volcanoes and their destructive forces. Mt. Hood, just south of Mt. St. Helens, is a potentially active volcano that if erupted could cause the same catastrophic damage Mt. St. Helens did.
